WA crane drivers threaten strike over safety measures - 6/2/2003

Crane drivers are threatening industrial action later this month to protest against state Government inaction on promised work safety measures.

The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union boss, Kevin Reynolds, says 10 extra WorkSafe inspectors were promised by January 2003, but no extra appointments have been made.

He says, about 10 crane drivers have been investigated so far this year, but not one builder or crane company has been targeted. Mr Reynolds says Employment Protection Minister John Kobelke promised new legislation to provide further safety inspectors, but nothing has happened.

"On the weekend we raised with the Government problems on demolition sites, and the Government, even Kobelke, directly told us, we haven't got the resources to do it," he said.

"The union's going to keep arcing up until they get those resources."
